The Webster, a luxury retailer originally based in South Beach, Florida, engaged Gertler & Wente Architects to design their New York headquarters in Soho. The project included the design and construction of the retail environment, as well as the historical reconstruction and modern expansion of the landmarked building. Working directly with the Landmarks Preservation Committee, Gertler & Wente carefully reconstructed the cast-iron details for the upper three stories, which had burned in a fire, restored the existing two remaining stories, and added a modern penthouse which is set back so it isn’t visible from the street.
The first four floors are devoted to men’s and woman’s fashion, the fifth level is an exclusive hair salon, and the penthouse houses a VIP suite with a terrace. The store features The Webster’s signature terrazzo floors, polished brass fixtures, artist installations and carefully curated furnishings and retail fixtures. The retail environment was designed in collaboration with Chris Osvai.
