Gertler & Wente was tasked with bringing this Upper West Side Classic-7 apartment into the twenty-first century. The layout favors the formality of the original plan in the public areas of the home, but opens up to a contemporary space in the more private kitchen and family living areas. The detailing of custom paneling, plaster crown moldings, and inlaid metalwork is a nod to the era of the building. Modern air-conditioning, and extensive audio/visual, lighting, and shade systems are cleverly hidden inside this meticulously detailed residence. The final result is a thoroughly contemporary home that retains the spirit of old New York. Photography by Harold Storey Zernike and Joan Tsen
