Gertler & Wente designed the new NYU Epilepsy Center. The design relocates their offices and exam rooms to the first floor of a new building in midtown Manhattan. The project is approximately 12,000 square feet divided in public/patient areas and private doctors' offices. The public area consists of reception, waiting area and exam rooms. Flow of patient traffic was a main design challenge due to the large volume of patients seen in the Center. This was resolved by creating a clear path where patients are greeted by registration, followed by the exam rooms and EEG rooms, followed by the nursing stations and then the scheduling area. Patients exit through a different door, back into the waiting area. A large aquarium in the waiting area, a soft color palette, indirect lighting and the use of light wood throughout the patient areas provide visual comfort and soothe them throughout their experience. The private offices have their own entrance providing doctors with the opportunity to access their offices without having to pass through the waiting area.
