Rutgers University asked Gertler & Wente Architects to help them develop two full floors of Bradley Hall on the Newark campus into new homes for the Music, Theater and Art Departments and the Academic and Education Department. The floor plate of Bradley Hall is 300’ by 60’, with a 20’ by 20’ column grid and continuous bays of windows on the east and west sides of the building. G&W worked closely with both the Rutgers facilities department and the individual end users to create a pleasing working environment within the tight budgetary constraints of $70 a square foot. The plan was driven by the need to separate and give individual identity to the various departments such as administration, guidance counseling and library, and at the same time, allow for free circulation and fire egress within the large floor plate.
